Sacramento City College Nisei Degree Project: Have You Seen Them?

     Granting honorary degrees to former internees denied their education is one important way of recognizing their sacrifice and for America to remember that other unpopular minorities should never be scapegoated like this in time of crisis. Sacramento City College (SCC) is trying to locate 224 Japanese American students for a graduation ceremony on May 19th.

     This is one of the largest groups of the 2,500 California Nisei college students who were removed from school and imprisoned in World War II camps in 1942.  Internment scattered many of these former Sacramento students throughout Northern California and the U.S.

     Keith Muraki, Counselor at Sacramento City College, is trying to contact the students (2nd generation Nisei) or their relatives to finally redress the injustice of being denied their college education.  Keith's late father Tom is one of those Nisei at SCC.

     All internees and their surviving relatives are invited to participate in the ceremony on May 19th.  The event will be during the regular SCC graduation at Hughes Stadium. People will qualify for honorary degrees whether or not they ever returned to college or were able to continue at another college later on.
